Before you rush off and buy another container of the glorious hot drink to add to your trolley, consider what you are really wanting: delicious creamy chocolate (in powder form) to dissolve in a mug of steaming hot milk. Right? Broken down even further it becomes cocoa, sugar and full cream milk. Wha la! As much as the marketing will tell you otherwise and the packaging looks amazing, hot chocolate really is just cocoa and sugar with milk, usually in powder form. Obviously, the way we buy it these days means it has to be packed, transported, stored, stand on shelf for months, compete with other manufacturers of the same product and still be suitable for use, so manufacturers have to add a few more ingredients and process steps.
